Abstract
Sexual violence reflects broader sociocultural systems that normalise gender inequality, silence survivors and shape disclosure and care. Given its prevalence, midwives are often the first professionals to support survivors within maternity services. Pregnancy and birth heighten vulnerability. Trauma may surface or intensify, affecting engagement, trust and outcomes. This second article in a series of five enables midwives to understand the sociocultural determinants of sexual violence, deliver culturally sensitive, ethical and compassionate care.
