Abstract
Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterised by diminished bone mass and density, representing a major public health problem. Fractures occurring on the neck of femur, vertebrae and distal forearm are considered potential signs of osteoporosis that require further investigation. Mandibular fractures are also a common injury, demonstrating varied aetiology but can result from low-energy trauma. We analysed 24 consecutive mandibular fractures and propose a protocol to identify when onward referral for bone density assessment should be considered.
